When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise the young rosemary plants to outdoor conditions prior to transplanting them outdoors in any well drained soil in full sun at a distance of 2 feet apart. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, they can be transplanted into 3 inch pots and grow on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. Germination of rosemary seeds tends to be erratic but usually only takes between 12-40 days. They will need heat to initiate germination so place in a propagator at 16 - 20 celsius or seal inside a polythene bag until after germination. Moisten the compost before sowing and then cover with a sprinkling of finely sieved compost. To begin with fill your required number of pots or seed trays with a good quality compost such as John Innes 'Seed and Cutting'. The best time to sow rosemary seeds is from March to May.
Unfortunately if you want to purchase a few rosemary plants it can be expensive, but it doesn't need to be as rosemary is very easy to propagate from seed. Not only will its foliage produce one of the plant world's most divine fragrances, its fresh leaves make for an essential herb in cooking. If you are looking to create a Mediterranean feel to the garden then you can't do much better that the gorgeously aromatic rosemary.
